How Does the BeeScales Compact Beehive Scale Work?

The BeeScales Compact is an innovative beehive scale that allows for easy monitoring of a bee colony's weight. It operates without a SIM card or smartphone, eliminating any annual usage fees.

  The scale is equipped with a wireless display that can be mounted on the beehive or bee house. The display always shows the measurements from the last three days, allowing weight fluctuations to be quickly analyzed – all without any additional devices.

  The display uses E-Paper technology, which is easily readable even in direct sunlight. This technology requires no power to display the image, allowing the display to operate for several years on a single battery charge..

Before placing the scale under the beehive, perform a test start to familiarize yourself with its operation. Place the scale on a table and switch it on using the button on the scale. A blue light will briefly appear at the switch – this indicates that the scale is working properly.

After about 30 seconds, a light will briefly flash on the wireless display. This indicates that the scale has found the connected wireless display and can communicate with it. Afterwards, the light on the switch begins to blink slowly – this shows that the scale is transmitting data to the display. The data transmission takes about 30 seconds.

After that, the display flashes several times – switching between black and white. This means the image on the display is being updated, showing the new measurement values. After about another minute, a second update of the display takes place, during which the measurements from the wireless temperature sensors are shown.

The scale takes measurements at 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. The weight difference between these two measurements represents the daily yield.

During the day, an additional intermediate measurement is taken. The display shows the measurements from the last three days. It always displays the most recently measured weight as well as the weight change for the current day.

The display also shows the measurement values from the temperature sensors. For each temperature, the last four characters of the code printed on the temperature sensor are displayed.

Mounting the Scale

Place the scale under the beehive so that the on/off switch is easily accessible and facing the mounted wireless display.

The display should be a few meters away from the scale. If the distance between the display and the scale is too great, the scale will not be able to show the measurements on the display.

The display can be attached to the beehive using the included self-adhesive Velcro strips.

Charging the Battery

The scale has a built-in battery that allows for one year of operation on a single charge. At the end of the season, connect a standard USB-C charger for mobile phones to the scale to recharge the built-in battery. Charging takes approximately 36 hours.

Charging is also possible using a so-called power bank – a portable battery and charger.

The wireless display and the temperature sensors also have their own batteries. However, these batteries cannot be recharged. If they run out, please notify us. The battery status of these devices is shown at the bottom left of the display.

Diagnosis and Update

The scale's software can be updated using an Android smartphone and the "BeeScales.io Diagnostics" app, which is available on the Google Play Store.
